Cora declines Philadelphia offer

Alex Cora has turned down the opportunity to manage the Philadelphia Phillies for the 2027 season. He informed club president Dave Dombrowski that he plans to take the year off.

This marks the second time in less than six months that Dombrowski has offered Cora the managerial position. Dombrowski previously talked to Cora in late April after the team fired Rob Thomson following a 9-19 start to the year.

Previous talks and past ties

When the job was offered in April, Cora stated that he wanted to spend the rest of the 2026 season with his family. The Boston Red Sox had fired Cora just one day prior to that initial conversation.

Cora and Dombrowski previously worked together in Boston from 2015 to 2019. Their time together included winning the World Series in 2018 during Cora's first year as manager. Dombrowski praised Cora in April by stating he has the potential to reach the same category as Hall of Fame managers.

Mattingly steps in as interim

After Cora declined the position in April, the Phillies turned to bench coach Don Mattingly as the interim replacement. The team rallied under Mattingly by going 79-55 over the final five months of the season.

Philadelphia reached the postseason as the National League's third wild card. The Atlanta Braves eliminated the Phillies in the NL Wild Card Series last week.

Uncertainty for the dugout

The Phillies have not formally announced an update regarding the status of Mattingly for the full-time role. Mattingly remains under contract as the team's bench coach for 2027.

Following the team's postseason exit, Mattingly deflected questions about his future. He stated that he is comfortable with whatever the club decides to do.
