Recovery on Track After Facial Injury
Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman is recovering quickly after being struck in the face by a foul ball on Sunday. The accident took place during the fourth inning in Cincinnati, when a ball off the bat of teammate Michael Busch hit Bregman while he stood in front of the on deck circle.
Bregman went to a local hospital before heading back to Chicago that evening. Tests showed multiple fractures in his cheek, but he will not need surgery. By Tuesday, the swelling under his left eye had decreased, and the 32 year old even completed a workout.
Encouraging Signs for Chicago
Manager Craig Counsell gave an upbeat report on the infielder, noting that Bregman is moving around well and acting like his usual self. Counsell called those details really good signs for the team. Team president Jed Hoyer confirmed that most of the significant bad things were avoided, leaving healing and pain tolerance as the next steps.
Bregman has provided major production in the second half of the campaign, ranking fourth in OPS among qualified hitters since the All Star break. On the year, he is hitting .262 with 26 home runs and 89 RBIs. He must run bases, field ground balls, and take batting practice before returning to action, but the Cubs have not ruled him out for this weekend series in Boston against the Red Sox.
Infield Cover During Bregman Absence
While Bregman works his way back, rookie Pedro Ramirez and second year player Matt Shaw will fill in at third base. Ramirez took the starting spot on Tuesday night against the Miami Marlins. However, the Cubs believe Bregman will reclaim his position soon.
