Pujols Heading to Houston for Astros Job
Former St. Louis Cardinals star Albert Pujols is traveling to Houston to interview for the vacant manager job with the Houston Astros. The in person interview is set for Thursday. It will be his first meeting with the Astros leadership as they continue searching for a new head manager.
The Astros appointed Randy Flores as their new general manager five days ago. Flores played eight seasons in the big leagues as a left handed pitcher. He spent five of those years playing alongside Pujols in St. Louis, where they won a championship together in 2006.
Managerial Experience and Past Interviews
Pujols retired from playing in 2022 and has openly shared his wish to manage a major league team. He has already built up management experience away from the majors.
In January 2025, Pujols won a championship leading Leones del Escogido in the Dominican winter league. He also managed the Dominican Republic national team in the World Baseball Classic, where his team reached the semifinals before losing to the United States.
During the previous hiring cycle, Pujols came close to landing a top job. He was a finalist for vacancies at the Los Angeles Angels and the San Diego Padres. Those teams ended up hiring rookie managers Kurt Suzuki and Craig Stammen.
Contract Situation and Other Candidates
The Astros are looking at multiple candidates for the post. New York Yankees bench coach Brad Ausmus is also among the names being considered by the organization.
If Houston decides to hire Pujols, a contract issue must be resolved. The 46 year old is currently tied to the Angels through a ten year personal services contract worth ten million dollars. That contract is entering its fifth year, but a buyout can be negotiated if Houston selects him.
Pujols becomes eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2028 and is widely expected to be selected on his first ballot.
