Top draft pick debuts in Cleveland
AJ Dybantsa finally stepped onto an NBA court on Wednesday night. The top pick from the June draft started at shooting guard and scored 19 points for the Washington Wizards. Washington could not secure the win, falling 121-111 to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Dybantsa played 26 minutes after missing his team's first four games with a sprained ankle. He started quickly by scoring nine points in the first quarter. His 19 points were the most by a Washington player in a career debut since Tom Gugliotta scored 20 points in 1992.
Cavaliers rally in the second half
The Wizards built a 76-63 lead early in the third quarter when Kyshawn George set up Dybantsa for an alley oop. George finished the game with 11 assists. Anthony Davis and Alex Sarr added 18 points each for Washington, while Bilal Coulibaly scored 17 points after making his first eight shots.
Cleveland responded with a strong push. The Cavaliers went on a 14 to 6 run, and an Evan Mobley layup with 11:19 left in the fourth quarter put Cleveland ahead 94-92. Washington led 105-104 late in the game, but Cleveland scored nine straight points to take full control.
Cleveland extends winning streak
Evan Mobley led the Cavaliers with 24 points, including 10 points in the fourth quarter, and made a career high five three pointers. Peyton Watson, acquired from Denver in the offseason, scored 22 points and took six rebounds in 28 minutes. Donovan Mitchell added 19 points.
This was Cleveland's third straight victory after dropping their season opener at Philadelphia, where they gave up a 29 point lead. The victory is Cleveland's 17th consecutive win over Washington, which is the longest active streak against one opponent in the league.
