Smith-Njigba shines for Seattle
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba had the best game of his career in the second week of the NFL season. The wide receiver, who has family ties to Sierra Leone, is chasing his second consecutive Offensive Player of the Year award. He recently helped Seattle reach the Super Bowl in February, and his latest performance shows he is not slowing down.
Smith-Njigba was unstoppable in the Seahawks' 31-7 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. On the opening drive, he scored a career-record 82-yard touchdown, beating his previous best by 19 yards. He did not stop there, adding more touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. He caught three touchdown passes from quarterback Drew Lock, finishing the game with 155 yards from nine receptions. AJ Barner also scored a late touchdown to seal the dominant win.
Okereke silences critics with Panthers
Linebacker Bobby Okereke also had a massive weekend. After moving from the New York Giants to the Carolina Panthers, some doubted his consistency. However, the linebacker, whose parents are from Nigeria, proved his worth in a 34-3 win against the Atlanta Falcons.
Okereke made a brilliant interception in the first quarter, catching a pass from Cooper Rush that was deflected by Devin Lloyd. He almost got a second interception, but replay officials overturned it. Still, Okereke finished with nine tackles, including six solo tackles, and a hit on the quarterback. This was his first win with his new team, following a Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears where he forced a fumble.
More African stars make their mark
Several other players with African roots stood out this week. Chuba Hubbard scored a touchdown to help the Panthers secure their win. Meanwhile, Kingsley Enagbare of the New York Jets recorded a sack and a forced fumble against his former team, the Green Bay Packers, though the Jets lost 20-17. Emeka Egbuka scored for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but his team fell short against the Cleveland Browns after a late failed connection with Baker Mayfield.
In defensive action, Zimbabwean linebacker Nate Landman returned from injury for the LA Rams. He made seven tackles in a 28-6 win over the New York Giants. Samson Ebukam also managed half a sack for the Falcons in their loss to the Panthers.
