Christian Izien Leads the Lions
Detroit Lions safety Christian Izien, who represents Nigeria, was named the Africa Player of the Week. He played a big role in the Lions' 31-24 victory over the New York Jets. Izien recorded 11 tackles in the game. Nine of those were solo tackles, and he also made three tackles for loss. His biggest play came just before halftime. Jets quarterback Geno Smith threw a long pass into a crowd of players, but Izien got there first to knock it away. The win moved the Lions to a 2-1 record for the season, while the Jets fell to 1-2.
Big Defensive Plays Across the League
Other players with African roots also made big defensive plays. Ghana's Thomas Incoom and Cameroon's Maema Njongmeta stood out for the Carolina Panthers. Njongmeta forced a fumble with a hard hit on Malachi Corley, and Incoom recovered the ball. Despite their efforts, the Panthers lost 21-18 to the Cleveland Browns. John Metchie III, who lived in Ghana as a child, scored a touchdown for the Panthers in that game. Princely Umanmielen also got a sack for Carolina in the defeat. Adetomiwa Adebawore secured 1.5 sacks to help the Indianapolis Colts beat the Houston Texans 19-17. Several other players of Nigerian descent got sacks in wins. Born in Lagos, Ruke Orhorhoro got a sack for the Jacksonville Jaguars in their 35-6 win over the New England Patriots. Ogbo Okoronkwo, Eyioma Uwazurike, and Dayo Odeyingbo also recorded sacks for their respective teams.
Offensive Sparks in Close Defeats
On offense, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who has ties to Sierra Leone, caught 10 passes for 128 yards and scored two touchdowns. However, his Seattle Seahawks suffered a narrow 33-31 defeat against the Washington Commanders.
