Manager Retains His Seat
Aaron Boone is returning to manage the New York Yankees for the 2027 season. This will be his tenth year leading the team.
The decision comes a week after the Yankees suffered another early exit from the playoffs. They were eliminated in the American League Division Series for the second straight year. Boone is currently in the final year of a two-year extension worth 10.5 million dollars signed in February 2025. He originally took over the job in December 2017, replacing Joe Girardi.
Mixed Results On The Field
Boone has delivered consistent winning records during the regular season. He has a winning percentage of .583, which ties him for 17th place in major league history. The team has made the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons.
The Yankees have extended their record streak to 34 consecutive winning seasons. They have never finished worse than two games over .500 under his command. However, the club has struggled to convert that regular success into titles.
The Yankees have not won a World Series since 2009. That 17-season wait is the second longest in the history of the franchise. They have now made 13 straight postseason appearances without taking home the championship trophy.
Postseason Struggles Continue
The team has reached the World Series only once with Boone in charge. They lost that series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games in 2024. They also reached the American League Championship Series twice, losing to the Houston Astros in 2019 and 2022.
Fielding errors have repeatedly hurt the team during major playoff games. This season, the Yankees made three errors in the first inning of Game 2 against the Tampa Bay Rays. They lost that game, and Tampa Bay completed a sweep in Game 3 in New York two days later.
After the Game 3 defeat, Boone admitted that the sudden end to the season was painful. He noted that while it is just a game, the painful finish should serve as motivation for the team moving forward.
