The Evolution Of The Playoffs
Major League Baseball changed its playoff structure back in 1969 by setting up the League Championship Series. This matchup brings together the winners of the Division Series to see which team moves on to represent the American League and the National League in the World Series.
Baseball expanded both the American League Championship Series and the National League Championship Series in 1985. The format changed from a best of five series to a best of seven format.
New York Yankees Dominate Records
When looking at the history of the American League Championship Series, the New York Yankees stand out with the most appearances at 19.
The Yankees also hold the records for the most games played at 99, the most wins at 54, and the most series wins at 12. On the other side, the Seattle Mariners hold the fewest series wins at zero after reaching the series in 1995, 2000, 2001, and 2025.
Individual Player And Pitcher Milestones
Several players left their mark on the American League Championship Series record books over the years. Derek Jeter holds the records for the most games at 54, most at bats at 226, most hits at 58, and most runs at 32.
Other notable player records include Fred Lynn with the highest batting average at .517, Manny Ramirez with the most home runs at 10, Bernie Williams with the most RBIs at 33, and Rickey Henderson with the most stolen bases at 16. Joe Torre secured the record for a manager with the most wins at 27.
Recent Winners And The 2026 Season
The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Cleveland Guardians in Game 6 to win the 2026 American League Championship Series. This victory means the Rays will make their third World Series appearance, where they will face the Milwaukee Brewers.
Recent years saw various champions take the title. The Toronto Blue Jays won in 2025, the New York Yankees won in 2024, and the Texas Rangers took the crown in 2023.
