Boost for New England Offense
New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown is likely to be activated on Saturday ahead of their home match against the New York Jets on Sunday. The wide receiver missed the team past four games due to a right high ankle sprain. He suffered the injury early in the third quarter of the season opener back on September 9.
The Patriots currently have an open spot on their 53 man roster. Activating Brown gives quarterback Drake Maye an elite option in the passing attack. New England enters Sunday match with a 3-2 record, while the visiting Jets sit at 2-3 on the season.
Maye Draws NBA Parallel
Drake Maye spoke about what Brown presence means for the rest of the offense. He compared the situation to playing basketball in the NBA. Maye mentioned that when defenses start double teaming the best player once they cross half court, it leaves someone else open in the corner for a three pointer or wide open for a dunk.
The quarterback noted that playing receiver with a guy like Brown works in a very similar way. He said that the team has a lot of guys who have made plays now, which will make life difficult for defenses. Maye added that they have a tough challenge this week and that he is looking forward to it.
Cautious Approach to Return
Brown returned to the practice field on Wednesday for the first time since getting hurt. He remained a limited participant throughout the week on the official team injury report. Head coach Mike Vrabel will make the final call on whether Brown plays on Sunday.
Brown explained that the key consideration for his return is for the long haul, not just for temporarily. As a result, the receiver will likely be eased back into the mix before he assumes his normal heavy workload.
Receiver Options and Schedule
New England has managed to build depth in their receiving room during Brown absence. The roster includes receivers Romeo Doubs, Pop Douglas, Efton Chism III, and Kyle Williams.
Following Sunday home clash against the New York Jets, the Patriots face a short week. They are scheduled to travel away to play the Chicago Bears on Thursday.
