Eddie Johnson Calls Out Landon Donovan
American soccer history comes with a long tradition of players starting public quarrels for no clear reason. On Thursday, retired striker Eddie Johnson caused a stir on social media by calling out national team legend Landon Donovan.
Johnson responded to comments from Donovan regarding young rising star Cavan Sullivan. Donovan had mentioned Freddy Adu and Johnson while trying to calm expectations for the youngster. Johnson fired back online by questioning Donovan about his own playing days in Germany, asking why people do not talk about his time there when he was not good enough.
Donovan, Pulisic, and the Gold Cup
Landon Donovan frequently finds himself involved in these disputes. Earlier, after Christian Pulisic asked to take the summer off during the 2025 Gold Cup, Donovan criticized players who skipped the tournament. He pointed to Cristiano Ronaldo playing through exhaustion for Portugal, adding that guys on vacation made him angry.
Pulisic's father responded online by sharing ChatGPT text explaining Donovan's own 144-day sabbatical from 2012 to 2013. Pulisic showed his support by clicking the like button on the post.
Jermaine Jones and Jordan Morris
The list of pointless arguments goes back several years. Following the failure of the national team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, midfielder Jermaine Jones took to Instagram Live to complain about players who refused to test themselves in Europe.
Jones specifically pointed fingers at Seattle Sounders forward Jordan Morris, claiming Morris turned down an opportunity in Germany. Jones expressed frustration on the livestream, questioning why players choose the easy way out.
More Classic Arguments
Other notable incidents include Alejandro Bedoya and Jozy Altidore trading jabs after an MLS match in 2017. Bedoya remarked that Altidore tended to go down easily in the box, prompting Altidore to respond on social media about people who talk behind backs.
More recently, Eric Wynalda went on a radio rant telling Donovan to stop polluting minds with advice about young players staying in MLS. Meanwhile, Tim Weah defended Pulisic during a documentary by calling the former players who criticize the current squad genuinely evil.
